Cross-Florida Barge Canal - a partially constructed canal across the north Florida peninsula intended to connect the Atlantic with the Gulf using the St. Johns and Oklawaha rivers. Construction was ultimately halted because of pressure from environmental groups but not before 20 miles of the lower reaches of the Oklawaha River had been destroyed by a dam.
